Meta is seeking a talented and experienced Surfacing Designer to join a dedicated team focused on creating category-defining hardware products. This is a permanent, onsite role based in the USA.

About the Role

As a Surfacing Designer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the visual and physical language of Meta's hardware. You will work closely with Industrial Designers, Mechanical Engineers, and Manufacturing Engineers to translate creative visions into production-ready 3D geometry. This position offers the opportunity to develop complex forms with precision and aesthetic appeal, manage design changes effectively, and contribute to products that will be used by millions worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the development of innovative hardware products that define their categories.
• Help define and refine the brand's visual and physical language through hardware design.
• Create and update 3D CAD surfaces and solid bodies to support the product development process and cross-discipline collaboration.
• Develop Class-A production-ready 3D CAD surfaces and bodies across multiple projects and product categories.
• Conceive elegant and effective solutions to complex geometric, ergonomic, and mechanical challenges, leveraging strong aesthetic and mechanical sensibilities.
• Collaborate effectively with multiple cross-functional teams on complex technical programs in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional experience as a 3D Modeler or CAD Surfacing Specialist, developing complex parts for industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, wearable tech, or sports equipment.
• Mid-level knowledge of high-end parametric CAD surfacing software, such as PTC Creo or Siemens NX, including "master/skeleton" modeling for highly integrated assemblies.
• Experience designing parts with consideration for manufacturing processes like plastic injection molding, CNC machining, and metal forming/casting/extrusion/stamping.
• Experience managing complex part interactions and assemblies.
• Good understanding of product architecture and internal component layout.
• Experience utilizing rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and CNC machining to validate part designs.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize workflows and drive measurable impact.
• Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices.
• Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development and staying current with emerging AI technologies.
• A strong sense of manufacturing requirements, coupled with a developed sense of design, aesthetics, and flow in areas like art, photography, automobiles, boats, or airplanes.
• A passion for building and creating, whether through tinkering, renovations, or working with bicycles, musical instruments, or cars.
• The ability to visualize, manipulate, and express shapes in CAD, words, or clay.
• The capacity to act as the "paintbrush" or "chisel," intuiting and expressing the desires of artists and sculptors.
• Excellent time management, energy, and interpersonal skills, capable of navigating ever-changing and challenging work schedules with kindness.
