Machine Learning Research Manager

This role is for someone who wants to operate at the intersection of Vision, Language, and Graph Theory, working with unique spatial, unstructured, and human collaboration data. You will bridge open-ended research (LLMs, Diffusion Models, GNNs) with product impact, empowering teams to dream, design, and build faster.
This is a permanent, remote position open to candidates across EMEA, Denmark, and the UK.
About the Role
As a Research Manager, you will:
- Build and lead a world-class applied research team, hiring and mentoring researchers skilled in deep learning theory and production engineering.
- Define the research roadmap to support the "Intelligent Canvas," identifying opportunities to model complex user behaviors, from multi-user collaboration to multi-format AI-powered generation.
- Pioneer research on unique spatial datasets, exploring massive multimodal and graph-based datasets to understand how teams organize information and collaborate.
- Drive "Research-to-Product" velocity by creating frameworks for rapidly testing and fine-tuning foundation models for specific domain tasks.
- Cultivate a culture of scientific rigor, encouraging the team to stay at the cutting edge while focusing on shipping user-delighting features.
- Partner with Engineering and Product Leadership to translate AI capabilities into intuitive solutions.
- Architect organizational processes for model governance, ensuring rigorous evaluation, reproducibility, and ethical AI practices.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates with:
- Proven technical leadership experience: 2+ years managing high-performing Applied Science or ML Engineering teams in a product-led tech company or top-tier research lab.
- Deep understanding of Multimodal & Generative AI: Expertise in the architecture of Transformers, Diffusion models, and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), with experience in fine-tuning and RAG at scale.
- A "Product-First" mindset: Prioritization of user value and latency constraints in production over pure accuracy metrics.
- Curiosity for complex problems: Excitement for modeling abstract concepts like "collaboration" and quantifying qualitative outcomes.
- Strategic communication skills: Ability to articulate the difference between "hype" and "utility" to executive stakeholders and align research with long-term strategy.
Education + Experience:
- Option A: PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, plus 2+ years of people management experience.
- Option B: Master’s degree or equivalent deep technical experience, plus 5+ years of industry experience in Machine Learning, including 2+ years of people management.
Bonus Points:
- A portfolio of research contributions, including publications in top-tier conferences or impactful technical blog posts.
- Familiarity with the modern MLOps stack and experience guiding teams in building research infrastructure.
