About the Role
Legal work is evolving, and firms that leverage AI understanding the substance of their matters will lead the way. NetDocuments is at the forefront, transforming legal content into structured, permission-aware legal intelligence. We are seeking a Manager of Legal Engineering to own the substantive legal quality of this intelligence and build the discipline of legal engineering within our R&D organization.
This is a hands-on, build-focused role within R&D, not a sales engineering or customer-facing position. You will be the legal authority guiding AI development, translating legal judgment into schemas, skills, and evaluation harnesses that ship in production. You will act as a player-coach, leading a small, specialized team of legal engineers while remaining a senior individual contributor.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the structuring of legal knowledge within NetDocuments, defining what must be captured and surfaced for various matter types and practice areas.
- Build the evaluation discipline for legal AI, designing and running evaluation harnesses to define and prove the quality of legal work product and agent outputs.
- Develop our legal skill strategy, authoring, testing, and validating executable domain knowledge for AI agents.
- Define legal taxonomy and structure, creating a coherent semantic layer for agents and products.
- Hire and lead a small team of legal engineers while remaining deeply hands-on.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, and Design teams across AI, user experience, and platform groups, serving as the substantive legal authority.
- Anticipate and ensure our products can answer the critical questions legal professionals would ask of a matter, document set, or agent's output.
Requirements
- Law degree and a minimum of 1-3 years of practicing attorney experience (firm or corporate legal department).
- A career path that has remained close to the legal industry through legal technology, knowledge management, innovation leadership, or legal data.
- Genuine fluency with modern AI development tools and concepts; comfortable in a code repository.
- A careful, methodical, and rigorous mindset focused on provability, structured thinking, and disciplined testing.
- Deep understanding of how legal work is performed, reasoning about different matter types (litigation vs. transaction), and the definition of substantive quality in legal work product.
- Comfort operating as a senior individual contributor and leader in a high-autonomy environment.
- Enthusiasm and conviction for the agentic future of legal work.
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience building or evaluating legal AI products at a legal technology company, law firm, or corporate legal department.
- Familiarity with legal taxonomies and standards such as FOLIO.
- Published work, open-source contributions, or community involvement in the legal engineering, legal innovation, or legal AI ecosystem.
- Experience designing evaluation frameworks, benchmark datasets, or quality measurement systems for domain-specific AI.
- Experience hiring and leading small, high-leverage technical, legal, or hybrid teams.
