About the Role
As a Marine Interdiction Agent (MIA), you will be responsible for conducting marine-based law enforcement operations. Your mission will involve the detection, prevention, interdiction, and apprehension of individuals and contraband attempting to illegally enter or attack the United States via maritime routes.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor the behavior and activities of suspect persons, vehicles, or vessels engaged in illegal activities.
- Interpret radar data to track and intercept vessels and individuals.
- Conduct searches of persons, vessels, baggage, and cargo for contraband or weapons.
- Collect, refine, and analyze strategic and tactical intelligence.
- Perform law enforcement duties related to searches, arrests, and evidence processing.
- Conduct investigative inquiries using various techniques.
- Utilize surveillance equipment to gather evidence.
- Write comprehensive arrest, criminal, and incident reports.
- Assist in the preparation of court cases and testify in legal proceedings.
Requirements
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates) for at least three of the last five years.
- Age: Candidates must be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday, unless they have prior creditable federal civilian law enforcement service. Age waivers may apply for certain veterans' preference eligibilities.
- Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC): Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard-issued MMC with one of the following capacities:
- Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV)
- Mate of 200 gross tons or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans)
- Chief Mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate Unlimited Oceans
- Master of 25 GRT or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans)
- An accepted Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation (MMLD) application for a qualifying capacity, with a credential status in positive standing.
- Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
- Applying advanced skills in controlling law enforcement scenes, conducting searches, making arrests, and processing evidence.
- Conducting investigative inquiries and examining records to identify logical conclusions.
- Utilizing surveillance equipment for evidence gathering.
- Writing detailed reports and assisting in legal proceedings.
- Applying arrest authorities and constitutional law.
- Education Substitution: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, three years of progressively higher-level graduate education, or an LL.M. may substitute for the experience requirement. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Training: Must successfully complete required training as a condition of employment.
