About the Role
The STCE team is Samsara's entrepreneurial engine, currently in a "Renaissance" phase. You will lead "Big Rock" projects, driving significant advancements in architecture and product capabilities. This role requires a "Founder-Engineer" mindset, where you will act as a product owner, engaging directly with customers to understand their challenges and develop innovative solutions. You will also be instrumental in refactoring our engineering culture to be AI-first, leveraging LLMs and AI to automate tasks and focus on high-level problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead significant projects within the Smart Trailers and Connected Equipment domains, adapting to pressing business needs.
- Drive major architectural and product capability improvements that enhance team performance.
- Engage directly with customers in the field to identify pain points and conceptualize solutions.
- Champion the adoption of AI and LLMs to automate development processes and accelerate problem-solving.
- Collaborate with firmware and hardware teams to optimize solutions across the entire technology stack, balancing real-time visibility with energy consumption.
- Mentor engineers in a high-ownership environment, fostering a culture where the best ideas prevail.
- Partner with Engineering Management to balance long-term technical health with iterative customer value delivery.
- Act as a cultural ambassador, promoting Samsara's core principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, and Adopt a Growth Mindset.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- 12+ years of experience in software design and development, with at least 4 years in an architect or leadership role.
- Demonstrated technical independence and the ability to define and drive technical direction.
- Expertise in writing high-quality, maintainable code in modern programming languages.
- Proven ability to leverage AI tools (e.g., Cursor, LLMs) to enhance productivity.
- Experience with web services at massive scale deployed on cloud providers such as AWS or Azure.
- Excellent collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to manage complex technical discussions.
- A "Founder-Engineer" mindset, with experience building and scaling a 0-1 product.
- Proficiency in using AI tools for an AI-native workflow.

- 15+ years of relevant industry experience in software development.
- Experience influencing corporate-level product and infrastructure strategy.
- Experience mentoring engineers on systems thinking, including lifecycles, edge cases, and failure modes.
