Senior Platform Engineer (Network and Edge Services)
Company: 1Password Location: Remote (Canada, USA) Type: Permanent
About 1Password
1Password is a leader in cybersecurity, dedicated to building a foundation for a safe and productive digital future. We empower over 180,000 businesses, from Fortune 100 companies to innovative AI firms, by providing secure access to the tools they need. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security, ensuring every identity is authentic, every sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We are growing rapidly, with over $400M in ARR and a consistent presence on the Forbes Cloud 100.
About the Role
The Network & Edge Services (NES) team at 1Password is responsible for the core networking infrastructure that powers our services. This includes everything from DNS resolution and CDN edge protection to ingress traffic management, service mesh, and wide-area connectivity.
As a Senior Platform Engineer on this team, you will be instrumental in building and maintaining the self-service platforms and robust network infrastructure that 1Password relies on. You will design, deliver, and operate network services across DNS, edge, ingress, and service mesh. A key part of this role involves creating tooling and abstractions that enable other engineering teams to manage their networking needs independently. You will also ensure the network is highly observable, secure, and resilient by default. Collaboration with cross-functional partners to understand their requirements and maintain alignment on priorities is essential. We foster a team culture of shared ownership, direct feedback, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver end-to-end network stack projects, including service mesh, DNS, ingress/egress, CDN, edge protection, and L4/L7 policy management. Shape technical vision, execute delivery, and ensure ongoing operability.
- Integrate networking capabilities into self-service platforms to streamline workflows and empower engineering teams.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, driving incident resolution and implementing improvements identified through postmortem analysis.
- Collaborate with partners in security, platform, and product engineering to translate needs into actionable work and communicate priorities, progress, and risks.
- Foster a collaborative team environment through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and mentorship.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with cloud networking and distributed systems at SaaS scale, with expertise in architecting and debugging across the full stack.
- Deep knowledge of internet architecture and modern web services (DNS, CDN, WAF, Load Balancing, Ingress, Service Mesh).
- Demonstrated ability to deliver reliable, observable, and secure infrastructure.
- Proficiency in Go (or similar programming languages) and Infrastructure as Code tools, particularly Terraform.
- Proven track record of building automation and platform tooling.
- Experience building reliable, observable platforms, defining Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and establishing these practices as team standards.
- On-call experience, including incident resolution and driving architectural improvements.
- A consistent security-first approach, including implementing least-privilege policies, ensuring encryption in transit, and evaluating attack surfaces.
Bonus Points For
- Experience designing self-service network abstractions (e.g., DNS provisioning, ingress configuration, network policy tooling).
- Experience with CDN, edge protection (cache strategy, WAF, origin shielding), VPNs, and wide-area connectivity in cloud environments.
- Familiarity with tools such as Envoy, Linkerd, Cloudfront, or Cloudflare.
- Open-source contributions and experience applying compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001) to networking and policy as code.
What We Offer
- Compensation:
- USA-based: Annual base salary between $150,000 - $210,000 USD.
- Canada-based: Annual base salary between $132,000 - $185,000 CAD.
- All roles include an equity grant and participation in incentive programs where applicable.
- Benefits & Wellbeing:
- Immediate participation in comprehensive benefits programs (health, dental, 401k/RRSP, and more).
- Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) policy.
- Maternity and parental leave top-up programs.
- Growth & Future:
- Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) program for most employees.
- Retirement matching program.
- A free 1Password account.
- Culture & Work Environment:
- Remote-first work environment with a focus on asynchronous communication.
