Director, Data Science: Data Science Tools
Liberty Mutual is seeking a highly technical and proactive Director, Data Science to join the Data Science Tools team within the Data Science Infrastructure organization. This role is focused on enhancing the end-to-end modeling workflow for USRM Data Science by developing internal tools, pipelines, and applications that streamline model development, evaluation, deployment, and iteration. Note: Candidates residing within 50 miles of Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; or Plano, TX will follow a hybrid work schedule, requiring two days per week in the office. All other candidates will work remotely with occasional travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build internal tools, pipelines, and applications to improve model development, evaluation, and deployment.
- Own the strategy and roadmaps for advancing data science workflows and tooling across USRM.
- Design, build, and maintain Python packages for organizational use.
- Evaluate and implement AI agent capabilities within tooling, utilizing approaches such as MCP, RAG, PydanticAI, LangChain, or related frameworks.
- Work with workflow and modeling tools including Luigi, Airflow, Celery, MLflow, H2O, scikit-learn, Optuna, and LightGBM.
- Utilize Python development tools such as Pydantic, FastAPI, uv, ruff, and pytest.
- Promote MLOps and AI agent best practices in collaboration with teams like Enterprise Data & Data Science.
- Stay current with developments in open-source data science frameworks, MLOps, and agentic coding practices.
- Contribute to shaping the direction of the Tools team and foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Professional experience building and maintaining Python-based data science or Machine Learning tooling used by multiple end-users or teams.
- Experience with Git, Bash/shell scripting, uv, pre-commit, ruff, pytest, or Pydantic in a professional setting.
- Experience building, deploying, or maintaining workflows or pipelines using Airflow, Luigi, Celery, Databricks, or MLflow.
- Experience implementing or supporting AI/LLM-based tooling with frameworks such as PydanticAI, LangChain, MCP, or RAG.
- Experience developing, reviewing, or maintaining internal Python packages, APIs, or data science applications using tools like FastAPI, Streamlit, Dash, NiceGUI, or Plotly.
- Applied agentic AI techniques in day-to-day development and incorporated AI capabilities directly into tools and applications.
- Broad knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
- Advanced knowledge of predictive toolsets, serving as an expert resource for tool development.
- Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely.
- Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside the organization.
- Ability to provide effective training and presentations to management and other groups.
- Ability to use analytical results to persuade teams and management towards a course of action.
- Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
- A value-driven perspective regarding work context and impact.
- Ph.D. in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science, or a related scientific field, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; OR a Master's degree in a scientific field, with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
