Job Description
About Dexter Health
Dexter Health is building AI-powered software designed to alleviate the administrative workload for healthcare care teams. Our mission is to enable caregivers to dedicate more time to patient care by reducing their administrative burden.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive AI Engineer to join our team. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building new AI features rapidly and enhancing the quality, reliability, and speed of existing AI workflows. You will be responsible for transforming ambiguous product ideas into production-ready AI features, with a focus on shipping AI product features and supporting AI systems and infrastructure as needed. You will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams, taking significant ownership and making technical decisions in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment. A strong understanding and daily use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or Copilot is expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop new AI-powered product features from conception through to production.
- Enhance existing AI workflows to improve quality, reliability, latency, and user value.
- Design and implement LLM-based workflows, including structured outputs, validation logic, and fallback mechanisms.
- Build evaluation loops, tests, and quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
- Integrate AI capabilities into existing product and backend systems.
- Work with both commercial and open-source LLMs, without being tied to a single provider.
- Support self-hosted model workflows where beneficial for quality, speed, cost, or control.
- Debug AI feature failures across inputs, outputs, data, backend logic, and user flows.
- Utilize AI development tools as an integral part of your daily workflow.
- Prioritize rapid delivery while maintaining high production quality.
Requirements
We value speed, intelligence, ownership, and product impact over formal seniority. We are looking for individuals who operate with urgency, figure things out, make progress under ambiguity, and prioritize outcomes.
Must-Have:
- Strong software engineering skills, particularly in Python or a similar backend language.
- Proven experience in building AI-powered product features or LLM-based workflows.
- Ability to quickly translate ambiguous product ideas into functional software.
- Solid understanding of designing, testing, validating, and improving AI outputs.
- Experience integrating AI workflows into production systems.
- Strong debugging skills across application logic, data, model outputs, and user behavior.
- Experience with evaluation, testing, validation, or quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
- Significant experience using AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot) daily.
- High intelligence, rapid learning ability, a bias for action, and a strong sense of ownership.
- Comfort with ambiguity, making quick decisions, and thriving in a high-trust startup environment.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience with frontend or full-stack product development.
- Experience with self-hosted LLMs, model serving, or inference optimization.
- Experience with open-source LLMs and their deployment workflows.
- Experience improving the latency, cost, quality, or reliability of AI systems.
- Experience in healthcare software, healthcare data, or regulated environments.
- Experience with structured data extraction, documentation automation, voice workflows, or workflow automation.
- German language skills.
- Knowledge of nursing home or elderly care workflows.
This role may not be suitable if:
- You are primarily seeking an ML research position.
- You are a prompt engineer without strong coding skills.
- You require detailed specifications before starting work.
- You prefer slow-paced, highly structured corporate environments.
- Your primary goal is management rather than hands-on building.
- You intend to use AI tools only occasionally.
- You prioritize perfect processes over fast, reliable execution.
What We Offer
- Remote work flexibility.
- Fair compensation based on skills, experience, and location.
- Ownership of critical backend systems.
- Opportunity to work on software directly impacting real healthcare workflows.
- A modern, AI-native development workflow.
- Opportunities for professional growth within the company.
