dexter health is building AI-powered software designed to reduce the administrative workload in healthcare, allowing caregivers to dedicate more time to patient care. We are seeking a proactive and skilled Applied AI Developer to join our team and contribute to the development of new AI features, enhancing the quality, reliability, and speed of our existing AI workflows.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on delivering production-ready AI features, rather than pure research or prompt engineering. You will be instrumental in transforming product ideas into functional AI solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop new AI-powered product features from conception through to production.
• Enhance existing AI workflows to improve quality, reliability, latency, and user value.
• Design and implement Large Language Model (LLM)-based workflows, including structured outputs, validation logic, and fallback mechanisms.
• Build evaluation loops, tests, and quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
• Integrate AI capabilities into existing product and backend systems.
• Work with both commercial and open-source LLMs, maintaining flexibility in provider choice.
• Support self-hosted model workflows when beneficial for quality, speed, cost, or control.
• Debug AI feature failures across inputs, outputs, data, backend logic, and user flows.
• Utilize AI development tools as an integral part of your daily workflow.
• Ship features rapidly while maintaining high production quality.

Requirements

Must-have:

• Strong software engineering skills, particularly in Python or a similar backend language.
• Proven experience in building AI-powered product features or LLM-based workflows.
• Ability to translate ambiguous product ideas into working software efficiently.
• Solid understanding of designing, testing, validating, and improving AI outputs.
• Experience integrating AI workflows into production environments.
• Excellent debugging skills across application logic, data, model outputs, and user behavior.
• Experience with evaluation, testing, validation, or quality assurance for AI-generated content.
• Significant experience using AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot) daily.
• High intelligence, rapid learning capacity, a bias for action, and a strong sense of ownership.
• Comfort working with ambiguity, making quick decisions, and thriving in a high-trust startup culture.
• Clear written and spoken English communication skills.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with frontend or fullstack product development.
• Experience with self-hosted LLMs, model serving, or inference optimization.
• Experience with open-source LLMs and their deployment workflows.
• Experience in improving AI system latency, cost, quality, or reliability.
• Background in healthcare software, healthcare data, or regulated environments.
• Experience with structured data extraction, documentation automation, voice workflows, or general workflow automation.
• German language skills.
• Familiarity with nursing homes or elderly care workflows.
