Nabu Casa · Lisboa, Lisboa, Lisboa, Portugal
Job Description
Technical Writer
Nabu Casa is the organization behind Home Assistant, the world's largest free and open-source smart home platform, serving over two million households. Established in 2018 by the founders and core contributors of Home Assistant, Nabu Casa is dedicated to ensuring the project's sustainability and preventing burnout. Our core principles of privacy, choice, and sustainability guide all our endeavors. As a profitable company with no external investors, every subscription and purchase directly funds the ongoing development of Home Assistant and other Open Home projects.
About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Writer to lead the documentation experience for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud. This is a high-ownership, high-impact role where you will be instrumental in making our products accessible to a global community of users and developers. You will create everything from first-time setup guides to in-depth API and integration documentation. Working directly with engineers, you will translate technical complexity into clear, empowering content that enables users to succeed independently. Our technically sophisticated community values accuracy and clarity above all, and this role requires someone who can earn the trust of both engineers and users.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end documentation experience for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud, ensuring content is accurate, up-to-date, and discoverable.
- Plan and deliver documentation for new features, integrations, and releases, synchronizing with the product shipping cycle.
- Collaborate directly with engineers to research and verify technical content, reducing the documentation burden on the engineering team.
- Continuously audit and improve existing documentation, flagging outdated content, filling gaps, and enhancing structure and tone.
- Define and maintain documentation standards, style guides, and templates to ensure consistency and maintainability of community contributions.
- Triage and act on documentation feedback from the community, support, and internal teams to prioritize improvements that best serve user outcomes.
- Contribute to the developer experience by creating API guides, integration documentation, and contributor docs to support the Open Home Foundation community and partner integrations.
- Track and regularly report on documentation quality signals, such as support ticket themes and community feedback.
Requirements
- Strong technical writing skills with a portfolio showcasing developer or product documentation.
- Ability to read and understand code (Python, YAML, REST APIs) sufficiently to produce accurate technical content with minimal assistance from engineers.
- Good understanding of smart home hardware and electronics, with the ability to troubleshoot basic issues independently.
- Experience with docs-as-code workflows, including Git, Markdown, and static site generators (e.g., MkDocs, Docusaurus).
- High degree of autonomy and self-direction; ability to proactively identify documentation needs.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to efficiently extract technical information from busy engineers.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Home Assistant or similar open-source or self-hosted software.
- Experience maintaining documentation for a community-driven project with external contributors.
- A systematic approach to auditing large documentation sets and prioritizing improvements methodically.
- Experience working asynchronously in a remote-first, distributed team.
