Medical Editor

Synchrony Group, LLC, a leading medical communications company headquartered in West Chester, PA, is seeking a detail-oriented Medical Editor to join our team. About the Role

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Medical Editor will play a crucial role in ensuring the editorial quality of medical communications content. This position involves independent work to fact-check, proofread, and edit content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, grammar, and style. You will be responsible for adhering to client and project requirements, including the AMA Manual of Style, client-specific style guides, and agency standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fact-check, substantively edit, and proofread various medical communications materials, including slide presentations, meeting materials, video scripts, flashcards, and websites.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of reference lists and layouts against manuscript drafts and client-approved files.
  • Ensure changes are correctly incorporated into layout documents or programmed digital files.
  • Manage copyright permissions requests for figures and tables, communicating costs to the Account Services team.
  • Prepare and submit content through the Veeva Vault system.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert on style guidelines (AMA, client-specific, agency standards), grammar, and usage.
  • Develop, maintain, and adhere to project-, product-, and client-specific style guides to ensure consistency.
  • Collaborate with Medical Services and Creative Services teams to ensure content accuracy and convey editorial comments.
  • Assist colleagues with editorial problem-solving and brainstorming.
  • Attend product status meetings to stay informed about ongoing editorial projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in science or English.
  • 3-5 years of pharmaceutical or medical editing experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of grammar, usage, and medical writing style guidelines, including the AMA Manual of Style.
  • Expert proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to coordinate and execute multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with general scientific concepts and the ability to grasp complex scientific applications.
  • Well-developed professional communication skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • 2 years of experience as an editor for a medical communications agency or pharmaceutical company marketing department.
  • Familiarity with agency workflow processes.
  • Familiarity with electronic document review systems.
  • Working knowledge of Veeva Vault (training will be provided).
  • Working knowledge of the permissions process (training will be provided).
