LawnStarter is the leading on-demand marketplace for lawn care and outdoor services, with over $100M in annual bookings. We are expanding to become the one-stop shop for all home services, operating across three brands on a single shared platform.

About Engineering at LawnStarter

Our engineering team is structured around initiative teams. Each team consists of a Product Engineer, a Product Manager, and a Designer, supported by an Engineering Manager who oversees a couple of initiatives and focuses on your growth. As the Product Engineer, you will lead AI agents, ship work, and be accountable for the initiative's success. We believe that a small number of strong engineers leveraging AI agents can outperform traditional team models. This role requires individuals who are wired for ownership and can deliver for a marketplace with real customers and service providers.

The Role

You will be the engineering anchor for one initiative at a time. This is a collaborative effort with your Product Manager and Designer, where you will have key participation across the entire lifecycle: shaping the problem, defining the technical approach, leading AI agents for implementation, shipping to production, and being accountable for the outcome.

Your focus is on the outcome, not just the volume of code merged. You will ensure AI agents produce high-quality, safe code and drive the initiative's key metrics. You will write critical code yourself when necessary.

What makes this role different:

  • Lead AI Agents, Not Humans: You will manage AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) as your team, owning the quality, safety, and velocity of their output.
  • Own an Outcome, Not a Ticket Queue: You are responsible from problem framing through production and post-launch metric review.
  • Horizontal Partnership: You will partner directly with Product and Design, without a tech lead above you or an architect approval process.
  • Staff-Level Bar: You are expected to make decisions independently and drive initiatives forward.

What You'll Own

  • Technical Approach: Define the architecture, data model, integration choices, rollout plan, observability, and rollback strategy for your initiative.
  • Agent-Led Implementation Quality: Ensure the quality, safety, and correctness of agent-authored code through effective prompts, guardrails, evaluations, tests, and review loops.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate daily with your PM and Designer, and weekly with your Engineering Manager.
  • Initiative Outcome: Drive the specific metric the initiative is designed to move, presenting results post-launch.
  • High Shipping Bar: Ensure production correctness, security, performance, and excellent customer and pro experiences.

Problems to Solve

  • Leading AI Agents at Staff-Level Quality: Develop workflows that enable AI agents to ship production-ready code equivalent to what a senior engineer would produce.
  • Owning Outcomes Without a Tech Lead: Make timely, well-documented decisions and remain accountable without relying on hierarchical approval.
  • Shipping Outcomes, Not Features: Focus on moving key business metrics, making strategic scope decisions, and following up on post-launch performance.

Who You Are

  • AI-Native: You are proficient and opinionated about using AI coding tools for production work.
  • Operating at Lead Level: You have a track record of making key decisions, shipping complex work, and taking ownership of outcomes.
  • Outcome-Driven: You measure success by metric movement and user experience improvements, not just code output.
  • Strong Horizontal Partner: You effectively collaborate with Product Managers and Designers, bringing engineering judgment to product decisions.
  • Decisive and Documented: You make and document decisions efficiently.
  • Impactful: You create reusable artifacts that benefit other engineers.
  • Customer-Centric: You prioritize customer and service provider outcomes.

Tech You'll Touch

  • AI Agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, internal agent stack, MCP servers, evals tooling.
  • Backend: PHP/Laravel.
  • Frontend: TypeScript/React/React Native.
  • Data: Redshift, dbt, Segment, Airflow.
  • Infra: AWS, Datadog, Sentry, GitHub Actions.
  • Documentation & Process: Brain, Confluence, Jira.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary of USD $80,000–$100,000 annual base.
  • Work from anywhere.
  • High ownership and autonomy.
  • A fast-moving team focused on building, learning, and growing.
