About Engineering at LawnStarter

Our engineering team is structured around initiative teams. Each team consists of a Product Engineer, a Product Manager, and a Designer, supported by an Engineering Manager who oversees a few initiatives and focuses on your growth. As an engineer, you will lead AI agents, drive the development process, and be accountable for the success of your initiative alongside your team. We believe that a small, highly skilled engineering team leveraging AI can outperform traditional development models. This role is for individuals who are wired for ownership and can deliver impactful solutions to a marketplace with active customers and service professionals.

The Role

You will be the engineering anchor for one initiative at a time. This is a collaborative effort within an "iron triangle" of you, your Product Manager, and your Designer. You will be involved in the entire product lifecycle: defining the problem, determining the technical approach, leading AI agents to implement the majority of the code, deploying to production, and owning the outcome. Your accountability is for the initiative's success, not just the volume of code produced. If an AI agent can safely implement a solution, your role is to ensure it's done correctly and that the key metrics improve. You will write critical code yourself when necessary.

What Makes This Role Unique:

• Lead AI Agents, Not Humans: Your team comprises AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and your internal agent stack. You are responsible for the quality, safety, and speed of their output.
• Own an Outcome, Not a Ticket Queue: You will manage the entire process from problem definition through production deployment and post-launch metric review.
• Horizontal Partnership: You will work directly with Product and Design without traditional layers of tech leads, architects, or ticket grooming committees.
• Staff-Level Expectations: This role requires a high degree of autonomy and decision-making. If you prefer to wait for direction, this may not be the right fit.

What You'll Own:

• Technical Approach: Define the architecture, data models, integration strategies, rollout plans, observability, and rollback procedures for your initiative.
• Agent-Led Implementation Quality: Ensure the quality, safety, and correctness of agent-authored code through effective prompts, guardrails, evaluations, tests, and review processes.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate daily with your PM on scope and tradeoffs, and with your Designer on UX and prototyping. Engage weekly with your EM on initiative health and growth.
• Initiative Outcome: Drive the specific metric your initiative is designed to impact. Present results and analysis post-launch in partnership with your PM.
• High Shipping Standards: Maintain production correctness, security, performance, and observability for all code shipped under your purview, whether agent-authored or not.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead AI agents to produce high-quality, production-ready code, ensuring adherence to conventions and rigorous testing.
• Make and document critical technical decisions independently, driving initiatives forward without hierarchical delays.
• Focus on achieving measurable outcomes rather than simply closing tickets.
• Collaborate effectively with Product Managers and Designers to shape product direction and user experience.
• Ensure the quality, security, and performance of all deployed software.
