Job Description
Applied AI Engineer
Company: Bjak Location: Zurich, Switzerland Work Model: Onsite
About the Role
Bjak is building a proactive AI smart assistant designed for everyday users, aiming to bring intelligence to conversations, errands, organization, and workflows. Our product focuses on achieving high reliability for long-running tasks, maintaining persistent context, and enabling real-world task completion. The system must handle multi-step reasoning, interact with external tools, and remain dependable despite the inherent non-deterministic nature of AI models.
As an Applied AI Engineer, you will be instrumental in translating AI model capabilities into tangible product features. You will own problems end-to-end, from shaping model behavior and building the surrounding systems to ensuring reliable performance in production. This role is at the crucial intersection of machine learning, systems engineering, and product development, with the goal of making AI truly functional and beneficial for users in real-world applications, not just in demonstrations.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and deploy AI features from conception to user experience (model → system → user experience).
- Design and iterate on prompts, tools, memory management, and agent workflows.
- Transform raw model outputs into structured, reliable, and predictable behaviors.
- Debug issues across the full technology stack, including models, orchestration, infrastructure, and user experience.
- Optimize for latency, cost, and overall production reliability.
- Develop lightweight evaluation frameworks to measure real-world performance.
- Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to translate ambiguous problems into functional systems.
Technical Focus
- Python
- PyTorch / JAX
- Large Language Models (LLMs) such as OpenAI-style APIs, LLaMA, Qwen, etc.
- Inference and serving technologies (e.g., vLLM)
- Vector Databases
Ideal Experience
- A strong foundation in machine learning and modern neural network architectures.
- Hands-on experience with training, fine-tuning, or deploying machine learning models.
- Proven ability to write clean, production-quality code.
- Comfort working across multiple abstraction layers, from models to infrastructure to product.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly in ambiguous and fast-paced environments.
- A proactive mindset focused on shipping, iteration, and continuous improvement.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work on a cutting-edge AI product with significant real-world impact.
- A collaborative environment where decisions are made collectively, and speed is balanced with quality.
- The chance to join a small, world-class team building a truly magical AI product.
- An invitation to be part of a team bringing practical AI benefits to billions globally.
Interview Process
If your profile aligns with our needs, we will reach out to schedule a maximum of four interviews. Applications are evaluated by our technical team members. Interviews may be conducted virtually or onsite. We value transparency and efficiency, aiming for prompt decisions. If you demonstrate the exceptional skills and mindset we seek, we will extend an offer to join us.
