Lawyer - Constitutional Law Team

About the Role
The Constitutional Law Team provides expert legal advice on a wide range of complex matters concerning Commonwealth and State constitutional law, statutory interpretation, and human rights. You will play a crucial role in advising government bodies and the Attorney-General on significant legal issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing advice on complex questions of Commonwealth and State constitutional law, including notices issued under s.78B of the Judiciary Act 1903 (Cth), inconsistency of laws, and limits on State power.
- Advising on statutory interpretation for matters outside other teams' specific expertise and complex Government law issues of fundamental importance to the State.
- Advising the Attorney-General on their role as the First Law Officer, including ministerial correspondence and grants of fiat.
- Providing advice and potential representation in matters involving the interpretation and application of the Human Rights Act 2019.
- Instructing the Solicitor-General and other counsel in complex matters before the High Court and other State and Federal Courts.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in constitutional law.
- Proficiency in statutory interpretation.
- Experience providing legal advice.
- Familiarity with litigation processes.
- Knowledge of human rights law.
